Hypnosis, in the form of work to make desired changes in behaviour or to conquer a habit or release a traumatic memory for example, involving trance has been around since the first medicine man discovered that healing worked better when people were in trance - which was frequently induced using repetitive drumming, dancing or chanting.

Since the coining of the term Hypnosis in the 19th century we have come a long way from that. People are now relaxed gently into a light trance where they are aware at all times of what is happening and secure in the knowledge that they will never be compromised in any way.

An example of how individually tailored sessions can sometimes be amusing to client and hypnotherapist is the following that happened with a client:

When I asked my client why he smoked he responded that he only smoked when driving. "Why?" I asked. "Because they tailgate me and cut me up and I get angry and smoking calms me down." I hypnotised him and he relaxed deeply and I gave him suggestions linked to his daughters who wanted their Daddy to have along and healthy life and not die prematurely - this was at his suggestion. I made many other suggestions to do with the benefits of stopping. Then I did something that I knew would make him think that I was the one with the problem. I suggested that he would see the drivers who caused his road rage as clowns with curly wigs and red noses and that he would also be aware of why he wanted to stop if he reached for the cigs. The following week he told me that he had laughed his way to work and back and hadn't wanted to smoke!We added in tailored suggestions specific to his needs and having tried evry other way to stop he finally stopped for good.

I offer three sessions and charge the same for all three as many charge for one - I believe in not just putting the client off smoking but also making sure that the reasons why they smoke are addressed to give them the best chance to quit smoking for good. I give a FREE session therapy CD to enable them to reinforce the suggestions and offer one free session if they lapse. That is an incentive for me to ensure that they stop smoking! However no - one has taken me up on the offer.

About Hypnotherapy and Hypnosis and trance:

Hypnotherapy has been found in all cultures in the guise of the Healing trance. “Hypnos” is a Greek word meaning “sleep” - however Hypnotherapy is anything but that: the client is fully awake and conscious at all times and is in a state akin to meditation or when you are lost in a good Film, Book or Play.
